VDI vs. SBC

When to use VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), and when to use SBC (Server Based Computing). SBC works well for many applications, but for some scenarios that are too complex or too resource intensive, VDI can solve a lot of problems. VDI, while being the new buzzword in the industry, also introduces its own challenges. Get a lowdown on VDI and SBC in this informative article written by none other than Brian Madden,

Which means total, 100% security without effecting the user experience at all.

Jetro COCKPIT2i introduces a revolutionary new concept that addresses the biggest problem of business IT today, of providing Internet access to users while keeping the the Enterprise Network secured against the inherent security threats of the web. It's a known fact that 70% of all security threats come from the internet, from flaws in browsers and web based applications. (source - Symantec research group, January 2007). All the known existing network security solutions in the world try to adddress this threats by filtering the internet traffic and provide only risk reduction - not full protection. While they can deal with known threats effectively (if they are constantly kept updated), they provide insufficient (if at all) protection against new malware that keeps mushrooming on the web at an alarming pace.

To achieve the level of security that COCKPIT2i provides against web threats, you would either have to totally deny web access to users or would have to do so by isolating the internet access into a physically separated network segment with different workstations for accessing enterprise data and for web browsing.

COCKPIT2i enables you to browse the internet using a virtual seperate network from the same desktop, seamlessly.

COCKPIT2i is a totally new concept for internet browsing from corporate networks. Instead of filtering the data coming in from the web, it keeps all web data outside the network.

All existing network security solutions try to identify the malicious objects (coming through the open ports at the firewall) in order to eliminate them. Those detection and filtering solutions require daily updates and while they may provide good protection against known threats, they provide insufficient (if at all) protection against new and unknown threats.

COCKPIT2i enables an un-parellaled level of security by keeping the total web browsing outside the network and does so so seamlessly that the user experience is not effected at all.

This is how it works -

  • Users have one browser icon on their desktop. When users browse to local corporate sites (company portals, web applications) or open local files, they are automatically using their desktop browser.
  • When users attempt to follow a link that will take them to external websites, the local browsing window is automatically and seamlessly replaced with the COCKPIT2i remote browsing window, so users continue their browsing session, just that the browsing is actually executed in the remote environment installed at the DMZ secured area.
  • Users continue to see their same settings, cookies, history, favorites, links etc. and as such both browsers act like one, they are fully synchronized and personalized. No training is required!
  • COCKPIT2i provides a seamless printing experience, Users continue to print like they are used to. COCKPIT2i automatically rebuilds all print files to XPDF and redirects these directly to the relevant printer. It does not allow a transfer of print files of any kind to the network.
  • COCKPIT2i does not allow downloads or uploads of files and the user has the option to email them to his/her corporate secured email address.
  • COCKPIT2i is fully integrated with corporate network directory (AD) services.
  • COCKPIT2i has a unique browsing experience which is achieved using "Jetro's patented technologies" such as hardware/software load balancing, seamless remote windows emulation, visual media streaming, smart link recognition, content redirection, remote printing and flash banners handling.
COCKPIT2i how it works in the desktop browsing environment

Without Jetro COCKPIT2i, users browse the internet from their local browser and have direct HTTP connection to the unsecured internet zone.

Traditional internet browsing requires a direct HTTP link from the userís browser to the external website and undetected harmful code travels throughout the enterprise. All other solutions try to identify the malicious objects (coming through those ports) in order to eliminate them so they may provide good protection against known threats but no protection at all against new and unknown threats.

With Jetro COCKPIT2i, users browse the internet remotely (not from their desktop) and only a secured video-like format enters the corporate network.

COCKPIT2i is the world's first server side virtual browser. It is installed at the DMZ (outside your corporate network) and fully integrated to user's local browsers. It provides the level of security that only separate network for browsing provides but it keeps full user experience and productivity of regular web browsing from same desktop. The network is not exposed to the internet and therefore is 100% secured. All HTTP and FTP ports (80, 443) are closed at the firewall and no active code or files travels through the network which means nothing is open to be exploited!

Here's a Competetive Analysis by Comsec Consulting white paper comparing some prominent network security solutions available and used worldwide.

Comsec analysis

Main Conclusion -

Comsec consultingWe compared the different types of solutions to protect the corporate network from the Internet and have found that each type of solution has its disadvantages. While a combination of different solutions may provide a fair solution, it will expose the network to many risks. We have found that COCKPIT2i, which was designed specifically for enterprise secure web browsing, provides the best performance, manageability and usability, while maintaining the highest possible level of web access security for its customers' networks.
